Organ Donorship

In New York State, in order to become an organ donor, you need to enroll and opt into the Organ Donorship Program. One way to do this is to check it off on the back of your permit or driver’s license.

Approximately 9,000 individuals are on a waiting list for organs in New York
A single organ donor can save up to eight lives and impact many more!
As of July 2019, there are more than 113,000 candidates for transplant on the U.S. national waiting list
2 out of every 3 people on the waiting list are over the age of 50
Almost 2,000 children under 18 are on the waiting list
In 2018, more than 145 million people over the age of 18 had registered as organ donors. That's more than half of all U.S. adults. (58 percent)

Next Steps

When you get a new driver's license in New York, you will be asked whether you would like to be an organ and tissue donor. If you say “yes,” a red heart and the title “Organ Donor” will appear on the front of your licence, and your information will be forwarded to the state organ donor registry.
